Analytical Essay —— Frankenstein Frankenstein is a classic Gothic novel written by Mary Shelly in the year of 1818. It is famous globally due to its unique way of narration and exploration into the theme of technology and morality, creator and creation, responsibility and neglection, nature of mankind. The story take place during the 1800s, where a young man named Victor Frankenstein who was passionate in anatomy and origin of life had revived a monster with dead pieces of human taken from the graveyard. Fearful of what he had done, he abandoned his creation, which led to the death of his little brother and family’s servant. He tried to negotiate with the monster. However, he ended the treaty and led to the death of more innocents… The horror-struck plot, terrifying setting and profound themes had influenced the creation of many related movie such as Blade Runner, a movie about the replicants (creations) fighting for their freedom and lifespan with human (creators), who were cold-blooded in the movie. The movie Blade Runner and the novel Frankenstein both explored these themes and their ethical implications by providing us a tremendous tale of tragedy. In both the novel Frankenstein and the movie Blade Runner, the creators of the monster and replicants were all following their motivation and desire, one wishing to achieve the goal of reviving life and the other wishing to create slaves that work for humanity. They used their abnormal intelligence and actions that led to their success. However, after their creation came to life, they did not take their responsibilities but brought pain and agony to their creation. In the novel, Victor created the monster but soon abandoned him due to his creepy outer appearance, leading to the doleful and unstoppable consequences. In the movie, Dr. Tyrell (the creator of replicants) had created the replicants but neglected their rights, he believed that they were only servants for human. His disdainful action had caused his death planned by replicants. The above examples had all discussed about the balance point of technology and morality, the nature of humanity and the responsibility for creations. As modern technology such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek grow dramatically, many people argued that the regulation of technology shall be established immediately. If no law enforcement or ethic restriction had been set, then these creations of human will soon outpower us and cause tragedies just like what happen in these two stories. Others suggest that we should continue development in technology to benefit the human society. In my opinion, it is essential that we find a balance point in between technology and morality to construct a bright future for all mankind. Another theme these two masterpieces introduced us is the nature of mankind, one questioned the empathy of mankind, the other showing the cruelty and greediness of the human nature. Both stories had shown the dualism of man and warned us to restrict our evil. The last point these two stories explored the responsibility of creators to creations. The irresponsible actions of the creators had caused irreversible damage to their creations internal feelings and brought anger and revenge to their creations’ heart. The death of Victor and Dr. Tyrell had been the most effective admonition of taking responsibility on our creations. In conclusion, the novel Frankenstein and the movie Blade Runner had both discussed about the theme of technology and morality, nature of humanity and responsibility for creations. By detailed descriptions, dreadful but exciting plots and vivid imaginations and scenes, we can understand the cautions of scientific or technological pursuit and the debates between technology and ethnics. These remarkable insights and morals will remain as an important spiritual wealth in the whole human society and influence deeply in future developments.
